DIY BATHROOM CONVERSION

Spare bathrooms with a single door and window can function as short or long-term darkrooms with minimal structural alteration.       The following sequence of images document the conversion of an ensuite bathroom into a demountable darkroom which can be taken down/stored in 60 minutes and reconstructed in approximately 90 minutes.

The project uses recycled timber and reclaimed plastic materials

bathroom dimensions: depth/width/ height = 6 x  9 x  8 feet

exhaust fan-external air inlet may ‘leak’ light - construct an external
( shown) or internal light baffle

window light excluded with lightweight MDF panel shows small light leak,
residual light leak excluded with corrugated cardboard

determine effectiveness of effort to exclude all unwanted light - turn off room lights & safe light, sit in total darkness for approx. 10 minutes until your eyes are adapted for low light/ night vision.

platform constructed from recycled, lightweight timber and plastic

provision for waste outlet/down pipe from darkroom sink

lower shelf utilised for processing trays and equipment storage

5 mm MDF board functions as base to support purpose built PVC sink

clear plastic hose attached to vanity tap provides running water in PVC sink

vanity drawers & cupboard provide storage areas for health & safety equipment and photo-chemistry.

print drying rack made from plastic fly screen panels sits over tub

broom cupboard for negative drying

ensuite wardrobe functions as dry-area work space
and storage
